How Do Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy Work?
Hypnosis is a state of relaxation with a heightened level of awareness. It is not something to fear, but rather a safe, natural state – similar to the daydream moments we experience when absorbed in a movie or book and unaware of time passing or the people around us.
During hypnosis you are not asleep and you remain in control. You will experience an imaginative, free-floating and pleasant state of mind with heightened awareness and focus.
Clinical hypnosis is very different from stage hypnosis, so you will not be asked to do anything foolish or useless. Stage hypnosis is entertainment, where a willing member of the audience volunteers to demonstrate the power of their imagination. Hypnosis requires your consent and in Hypnotherapy, rather than someone controlling you, its purpose is to enable you to feel more in control of your own life.
Hypnotherapy is the work done while the conscious mind is relaxed; it accesses the most powerful part of our minds, the subconscious, to make those changes we desire. There are two different types of hypnotherapy treatments in conscious hypnosis: Suggestion Therapy and Analytical Therapy.
Suggestion Therapy is very effective in treating issues such as smoking, nail biting, pre-test nerves, weight loss, confidence boosting and fear of public speaking. This is not an exhaustive list and is intended as a guide. Typically my clients need one to three sessions of suggestion therapy.
Analytical Therapy is used to identify the symptoms and root causes of more complex issues; once the causes are revealed it becomes easier to relieve the symptoms. During therapy you will enter a state of heightened awareness induced by suggestion therapy. The moment of liberating enlightenment can come at any time but the average number of sessions is between six and ten. This approach is also known as ‘Cause and Effect’.
